In this video, we’re starting a conversation about the fears that keep people from getting the financial protection their families may need.

Which Life Insurance Fear Sounds Like You?

Fear #1: The Cost

“What if I can’t afford another monthly bill?”

Fear #2: Getting Denied

“What if my age or health keeps me from qualifying?”

Fear #3: The Wrong Policy

“What if I buy coverage that doesn’t fit my family?”

Fear #4: Wasting Money

“What if I pay for years and never personally benefit from the policy?”

Fear #5: Not Understanding

“What if I don’t understand the fine print until it’s too late?”

1. I’m Afraid Life Insurance Will Cost Too Much

Let’s start with the fear I hear most often: money.

You already have a mortgage or rent, groceries, utilities, car insurance, and everything else coming out of your paycheck. The last thing you want is another bill.

But before deciding life insurance is too expensive, find out what coverage may actually cost for your situation.

Your premium can depend on your age, health, coverage amount, policy type, tobacco use, and the insurance company’s underwriting rules.

TERM LIFE

Coverage for a specified period, such as 10, 20, or 30 years, depending on the policy and your eligibility. Term life often offers a larger initial death benefit for a lower premium than permanent insurance.

WHOLE LIFE

Permanent coverage designed to remain in force under the policy terms. Traditional whole life generally has higher initial premiums than term life, but it also builds cash value.

Latrecia’s Tip:

Don’t buy a policy with a premium you can’t reasonably maintain. A policy that lapses because you cannot keep paying may leave your family without the protection you intended.

2. I’m Afraid My Health Will Get Me Denied

Maybe you have diabetes, high blood pressure, a previous surgery, or another medical condition. Maybe you’ve already decided an insurance company won’t approve you.

Different companies and policies can have different underwriting requirements. One company’s decision does not necessarily tell you what every other company will do.

Some policies use traditional medical underwriting. Others may offer simplified underwriting or no-medical-exam applications.

Certain guaranteed issue policies may accept eligible applicants without health questions, but they can have higher costs, lower coverage limits, or graded death benefits during an initial period.

Important:

No medical exam does not automatically mean guaranteed approval. And guaranteed issue does not automatically mean the full death benefit is payable immediately for every cause of death.

3. I’m Afraid I’ll Buy the Wrong Life Insurance

This fear makes sense. Life insurance isn’t something most people shop for every week.

You may hear terms such as death benefit, cash value, beneficiary, premium, rider, term life, and universal life.

And suddenly you’re wondering whether you need an insurance policy or a college degree just to understand the application!

Start with the reason you’re buying coverage.

Do you want to help replace your income if you die while your children are young?

Do you want coverage that could help your spouse continue paying the mortgage?

Are you primarily concerned about final expenses?

Do you want permanent coverage, and do you understand its costs?

How much can you comfortably pay each month?

Once you understand your goal, comparing policies becomes much easier.

4. I’m Afraid I’ll Pay for Life Insurance and Never Use It

Now, this is the fear that makes people laugh when we talk about it.

“I don’t want to keep paying for something I’m never going to enjoy!”

But let’s think about the purpose of life insurance.

When you buy life insurance primarily to provide a death benefit, you’re purchasing financial protection for the people who may need money after your death.

With term life insurance, if you outlive the coverage period, the policy generally ends without paying a death benefit, unless it has a specific feature that provides otherwise.

Permanent policies work differently and may build cash value, but that doesn’t mean every dollar paid in premiums becomes available for withdrawal.

Life Insurance Isn’t About Hoping Something Happens.

It’s about preparing financially in case something does.

If your family depends on your income, your caregiving, or your financial contributions, the purpose of coverage is to help protect them from the financial consequences of losing you.

5. I’m Afraid the Insurance Company Won’t Pay

Nobody wants to pay premiums for years only to leave their family confused about whether a claim will be paid.

That’s why understanding the contract before buying matters.

Ask about the death benefit, exclusions, limitations, contestability provisions, and any graded-benefit period.

Answer application questions truthfully and carefully. Keep your policy in force according to its terms. And make sure your beneficiary knows the policy exists.

Don’t forget your beneficiary!

Your beneficiary is the person or organization you designate to receive the death benefit. Review your beneficiary information after major life changes such as marriage, divorce, or the death of someone you’ve named.

What Should You Do If You’re Still Afraid?

You don’t have to make a decision before you’re ready. But you can take a few simple steps to understand your options.

Write down your biggest concern about buying coverage.

Decide who would need financial support if you died.

Review any life insurance you already have through work.

Determine a monthly premium you could reasonably maintain.

Compare policies and ask questions about anything you don’t understand.

Review the application and policy terms before making a final decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get life insurance if I have health problems?

Possibly. Eligibility depends on your age, medical history, the insurance company, and the policy. Some applicants may qualify for traditional coverage, while others may need to explore different underwriting options.

Is term life insurance a waste of money if I outlive it?

Term life provides protection during the specified coverage period. If you outlive the term, the policy generally ends without paying a death benefit. Whether that makes sense depends on why you purchased the coverage.

What happens if I cannot afford my premium?

Contact your insurer or agent before the policy lapses. Depending on the contract, there may be options available. Do not assume you can simply stop paying without affecting your coverage.

How do I know which life insurance policy is right for me?

Start with your family’s financial needs, the amount of coverage you want, how long you need it, your health, and your budget. Then compare the actual policy terms and quotes.

You Don’t Have to Figure Out Life Insurance Alone

Maybe your biggest fear is the cost. Maybe it’s getting denied. Maybe it’s signing something you don’t fully understand.
